Principal’s Introduction
Welcome Back Term Four
What a busy and productive start to the term already! Welcome back to term 4 and a very special welcome to our new students and families. Over the weekend the Voice Referendum was held and Newborough PS was a voting venue. Thank you to all the year five parents and students who ran the very successful Democracy Sausage Sizzle. It was very well attended and hopefully will raise some much-needed funds to help reduce the costs for next years' camp and graduation activities.
In a couple of weeks, we have the much-anticipated Newbros ‘Camp Out’ on Hazlitt Field. This is a great opportunity for Dads, Father Figures and kids to have a sleepover and Mums to get a short break. It was lots of fun last time so I am sure this one will be too.
During weeks one to four we will be conducting a broad range of assessments to monitor progress, assist with reporting and help plan learning programs for the future. Throughout Term 4 teachers will be hosting Parent Interviews. The arrangements may vary from class to class so check in with your child’s teacher and class newsletters. Later in the term we have Interm Swimming lessons. If this weeks’ weather is anything to go by it will be quite warm.
Then of course we have all the usual Term 4 events such as graduation, awards, planning for 2024. As you may be aware this will be my last year before retiring. My intention is to continue on as normal preparing for 2024 as though I will still be here. The selection process is underway for the new Principal who will commence January 25th 2024. I look forward to welcoming the new Principal and assisting with transition.
Crosswalk Attendant
Our Crosswalk Attendant, Gary, will not be available from Wednesday 25th October (Week 3) till Tuesday 12th December (Week 10). Please continue to use the regular crossing point and be extra careful crossing a very busy Newborough Street.
Student Placements for 2024
If your child (ren) will not be attending Newborough PS next year could you, please let the front office by the 3rd November 2023. This will assist us with planning for 2024.
As is always the case during Term 4, Newborough PS’s class organisation for the following year takes place. A number of considerations are taken into account based on improving student performance. These include: staffing numbers, resourcing, recommended class sizes, a balance of academic abilities within each class, the need to evenly distribute students with special needs (academically, socially and behaviourally), an equitable distribution of gender, the ability to work independently if placed in a multi-age class. It is very likely that there will be a number of multi-age classes across the school in 2024.
If you wish to communicate to me your child’s special needs or considerations, please present your correspondence to the Principal via the office marked “Private and Confidential” by Friday 17th November (Week 6). You may wish to email your correspondence to John.Worthy@education.wa.edu.au. Please note, this information will be considered when placing your child, however, all parent preferences may not be facilitated. Requesting a particular teacher will not be considered. Only sound educational reasons will be considered. This information will be added to the data we already have.
The placement of children and the make-up of classes is made in consultation with teachers. It is not a parent decision. Every child is equally important. The final decision for placements rests with the Principal. If you have any queries or would like to discuss this, please contact me to make an appointment.
It is unlikely that the structure of classes, their location and teacher will be presented at the end of this year. With our numbers constantly fluctuating it would be unfair to announce classes this year and then restructure when students return. Classes will be posted on classroom doors when you pick up your booklist items at the start of 2024.
Teachers Make a Difference to the Lives of Newborough Students Every Day. Hats Off To Teachers
World Teachers’ Day 2023 is celebrated across Australia on Friday 27 October. It’s a chance to recognise and thank teachers who work in our public schools.
Teachers play an important role in our community and we thank them for their passion and dedication to inspire children and young people.

Canteen
Welcome back to term 4 of Canteen,
We're excited for Canteen this term. Canteen continues to open most Thursdays and Fridays but there are days we cannot open due to other commitments and as such, we will open on some Mondays also.
Please see the Canteen Calendar (below or on the school website) as it stands, there may be some changes to come but you will be notified on these.
I very much appreciate all the amazing volunteers we've had so far, and I hope this continues. Without volunteers the canteen cannot operate. At the moment I don't have enough volunteer assistance as I need to offer some specials like Nachos, Pizza, Chicken Tender Wraps etc. I know the kids are loving the food and I can assure you we love pumping it out. All homemade cakes and hot meals and toasties made with top quality produce and love (and hidden vegetables!).
I was hoping we might be able to extend our volunteer catchment to some grandparents or carers. No training is necessary, but a Working with Children permit is required. Parents/Carers of NPS students are exempt from this requirement. The canteen will be happy to assist and pay for the Working with Children permit as we want to encourage any grandparents, carers or neighbours that might enjoy the interaction in the Canteen. It really is a joyful experience in the Canteen, making food, having a coffee and a sweet treat, and interacting with the kids at recess and after lunch. Please could you extend the invite to your extended family network so that we continue to operate at our best. Feel free to contact me for more information at newborough.canteen.manager1@gmail.com
It's getting to great ice cream weather so don't forget to send the kids with some pocket money for an ice cream after lunch. They've got beautiful manners when they come up to the window and we love to see that.
It's a pleasure to offer the Canteen to your school. My own children don't have an onsite canteen service at their school, and this means no recess is offered, hot meals that unfortunately are cold by the time they get there, high prices and no interaction with the amazing Canteen staff and parent volunteers. You are so lucky the P&C can provide this service, but it is dependent on the ongoing support of the school community. Let’s keep it going for as long as we can!
Thanks so much,
Jen
